“They Destroyed My Life”: A Christian Survivor’s Fight for Justice in Punjab

A 25-year-old Christian woman lies in a hospital bed in Punjab, fighting not only for her health but for a sense of dignity that was violently taken from her. Her body bears the marks of an assault that should never have happened; her voice, though weak, carries a quiet but unwavering plea for justice.

She comes from Chak No. 175-RB Shahkot, a small village in Nankana Sahib District, where life has never been easy. Like many in her family, she worked as a daily-wage laborer, picking fruit in orchards to survive. On April 11, what began as an ordinary day of work in a citrus orchard turned into a nightmare that has shaken her family and community.

During a short break, she stepped away to drink water. In those few moments, two men allegedly overpowered her and dragged her into a secluded room. What followed was an act of cruelty that left her physically broken and emotionally scarred. She recalls being threatened, restrained, and silenced—her attempts to resist met with violence.

“They destroyed my life,” she said quietly from her hospital bed. “I just want justice.”

Hours later, she was found unconscious near her home, her body showing signs of severe trauma. Her family rushed her to a nearby hospital, where she remained unconscious for a day. When she finally awoke, she recounted the horror she had endured.

The injuries she suffered were devastating. Doctors have since struggled to stabilize her condition, which worsened due to heavy bleeding and infection. She was later transferred to Lahore for more specialized care, where she remains in critical condition.

For her family, the pain is not only in what happened, but in what has followed. Her uncle, Tariq Masih, who now cares for her and her siblings after her father’s death, says they are facing threats and pressure to abandon the case.

“They tell us we are poor and powerless,” he said. “They want us to stay silent.”

But silence is something he refuses to accept.

Despite their poverty and fear, the family is determined to seek justice. Their faith, he says, is what sustains them in this darkest hour.

“We believe God will not leave us alone,” he said.

The case has drawn the attention of a local advocacy group, Christians’ True Spirit, which has stepped in to support the family. Even for those accustomed to handling such cases, the severity of this attack has been deeply disturbing.

“This level of brutality is shocking,” said a representative of the group. “We will pursue this case until those responsible are held accountable.”

Yet justice feels uncertain. Delays in the investigation have already allowed the main accused to secure temporary bail, raising fears that the system may fail her before it protects her.

For now, the young woman remains in a hospital bed, her future unclear. Her story is one of pain—but also of quiet courage. In her frailty, she continues to speak, to remember, and to ask for what should never have to be demanded: justice, dignity, and the right to live without fear.

Her voice, though faint, refuses to disappear.
